When Hippie asked me to host The Oma in my town of Athens, GA, I was at once excited and nervous. Excited, because I was finally going to meet the big, gray guy. Nervous, because I wasn’t sure if he would get along with all my friends.
My friends aren’t like other people’s friends.
First, he met my zombies.
After a few awkward moments and a couple experimental bites, the zombies realized that he wasn’t on the menu and entertained him with stories.
Next, I took The Oma to work with me to meet my robots.
He fit in so well with my work robots and my desk’s general decor, that I almost forgot he was there. Until he started trying to photocopy is butt, that is. I told him that I didn’t know what he’d heard about how an office works, but that was unacceptable behavior. Unless it’s during an office Christmas party. Then all bets are off. He said he’d try to visit again in December.
I then introduced The Oma to my newest robot friend.
This little guy is normally pretty shy, but around The Oma, he really opened up.
(Yes, those are robot nesting dolls and, yes, they are just as rad as they look.)
After The Oma met everyone, I took him to brunch at one of my favorite restaurants, Mama’s Boy.
Oma was concerned when he saw the tattooed waitstaff, eclectic decorations, and mis-matched chairs in this small, local restaurant. But when the food arrived, he forgot all about our waiter’s lip ring, and dug in. The special that day was a brisket, bell pepper, and avocado scrambler with home fry potatoes. He was a bit disappointed that he didn’t get to try grits, being in the south and all. Me being a transplant from Michigan, told him that he wasn’t missing much.
The next day, I took The Oma to another Athens original, Jittery Joe’s, for coffee.
Joe’s has been supplying our town with locally roasted coffee since 1994. Coffee is serious business in a college town like Athens. I’m not sure if there are more bars or coffee shops within a five mile radius of UGA’s campus. I may do some more research on this. You know. For science.
I had planned on taking The Oma on a tour of the campus, but weather and time conspired against us.
So long, The Oma! I know this is just the first of many wonderful adventures that await you.
